台灣人民對一百七十五億元［1］的壹傳媒銷售案提出抗議

Reporter: These students and professors behind me are braving the rain in the
cold weather to protest outside Taiwan’s cabinet building against the purchase
of Next Media. This is one of the several demonstrations that have been held
since a group of Taiwanese companies announced their plans to buy the company.
Now, like the protesters here, many people in Taiwan are worried that Taiwan’s
media will be dominated by a small number of players. One of the buyers in the
group, Mr. Tsai Eng-meng, already owns the Want Want Media Group, if the deal
goes through, he will own nearly 50% of Taiwan’s media. Mr. Tsai also has
significant business interest in China. He is known for his pro-Beijing views. He
was only recently announced that he is the one main stakeholders in the deal.
In recent days, many protesters like these have demanded that the government stop
the deal from going through. For their part, the prospect buyers have tried to
ease concerns and have said that they will try to maintain editorial
independence. Now across town, another protest is being held by the employees
of Apply Daily, the flagship newspaper for Next Media. They are demanding that
agreements be signed to ensure editorial freedom. Cindy sui, BBC News, Taipei.
